Language

Thai is the official language. English is widely spoken in marinas, sailing clubs, and major tourist hubs like Phuket, Koh Samui, and Koh Chang.

Currency

The official currency is the Thai Baht (THB).

  • ATMs are widely available in inhabited islands and marinas.
  • Most ATMs charge a flat fee of approximately 220 THB for foreign cards.

Tax

The Value Added Tax (VAT) in Thailand is 7%. Tourists can claim a VAT refund on high-value equipment or luxury purchases at participating stores.

Electricity & Plugs

The voltage is 220V at 50Hz. Sockets are typically Type A, B, or C (two flat or round pins). Most modern devices work without an adapter, but a universal adapter is recommended for boat use.

Visas & Entry for Tourists (Charterers)

  • Visa Exemption: Citizens of many countries (including Israel) are eligible for a 60-day visa exemption upon arrival (as of 2026). This can be extended for an additional 30 days at local immigration offices.
  • Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC): You must register in the TDAC system before landing.
  • Marine National Park Fees: Charterers must pay daily entry fees (typically 200–400 THB per person) when entering park waters. Rangers may board your boat to check receipts—keep them handy.

Fishing Regulations (Recreational)

Recreational fishing is permitted in most areas but is strictly prohibited within Marine National Parks.

  • Licenses: Currently, no individual license is required for basic rod-and-line fishing from a boat or shore for personal use.
  • Prohibited Areas: Fishing is strictly forbidden in National Parks (e.g., Similan Islands, Phi Phi, Ang Thong, and Mu Ko Chang). Penalties include heavy fines and equipment confiscation.
  • Prohibited Methods:
    • Use of nets, traps, or commercial-grade equipment.
    • Use of explosives, electricity, or poisons.
    • Collecting or damaging coral and Giant Clams.
  • Protected Species: It is strictly forbidden to catch Whale Sharks, Manta Rays, and Sea Turtles.
  • Spearfishing: Prohibited inside National Parks and strictly forbidden everywhere when using SCUBA gear.

Drone Regulations

Thailand has very strict drone laws. Flying without registration is a criminal offense.

  • Mandatory Registration: Every drone with a camera must be registered with two entities:
    1. CAAT (Civil Aviation Authority): For the pilot's permit.
    2. NBTC (Broadcasting & Telecom Commission): For the device/frequency registration.
  • Flight Rules:
    1. Maximum altitude: 90 meters (approx. 300 feet).
    2. Safety distance: Maintain at least 30 meters from people, other boats, and buildings.
    3. Prohibited Zones: Within 9km of airports, over government buildings, or military areas.
  • National Parks: Flying in a National Park requires additional written permission from the specific park management.

Recreational Diving Regulations (SCUBA)

  • Certification: Divers must hold a valid international certification (PADI, SSI, etc.).
  • Environmental Rules:
    • It is strictly forbidden to touch corals, stand on them, or feed fish.
    • Sunscreens containing coral-damaging chemicals (like Oxybenzone) are prohibited in National Parks.
  • Independent Diving: Allowed from your chartered yacht, but you must display a clear Alpha Flag. Using a local guide is highly recommended due to strong currents in certain areas.

Important Notes for Skippers

  • E-Cigarettes (Vapes): These are strictly prohibited in Thailand. Possession on a boat can lead to heavy fines or imprisonment.
  • Alcohol: You are permitted to bring 1 liter of alcohol per person into the country.
  • Provisioning: In major sailing hubs like Phuket or Koh Chang, supermarket delivery services can bring supplies directly to the marina pier. It is recommended to order 24 hours in advance.
  • Koh Chang Specifics: When sailing the Koh Chang archipelago, ensure you stock up on fuel and water in Salak Phet or Ao Sapparot, as resources are limited on the outer islands like Koh Kut.
